Windows 7 End of Support Warnings - What Your Need to Know

Windows 7 End of SupportA dreaded warning about Windows 7 End of Support! If you and your business are still holding out on upgrading from Windows 7, be aware that users have started to report the appearance of a pop-up message from Microsoft.  The message, shown here, explains that support for the operating system will end on January 14, 2020.

Microsoft has been warning users of this impending end of support for some time now, but they have now stepped up their efforts to make sure users are aware of the timing and encouraging users to make the switch to Windows 10.  In a March 2019 blog post, Matt Barlow, Corporate Vice President of Windows explained these notifications:

"To help...customers get advance notice of this change, we are reaching out with information and resources.  Beginning next month, if you are a Windows 7 customer, you can expect to see a notification appear on your Windows 7 PC.  This is a courtesy reminder that you can expect to see a handful of times in 2019.  By starting reminders now, our hope is that you have time to plan and prepare for this transition."

With more than 39% of all PCs in the world still running Windows 7, it's important to understand what will occur as of January 14, 2020.  You will be able to still USE Windows 7 and your computer will function just as it does today, but Microsoft will no longer provide support for the Windows 7 product.  This means no more updates of any kind, including critical security patches, that currently protect your computer from the risk of viruses and other forms of malware.  You may be saying, "that's fine, I have antivirus software to protect me," and that will provide you with a layer of protection.  But without these security patches, your systems will be infinitely more vulnerable to sophisticated attacks like phishing and ransomware.
